Email Security...embedded images?

If I'm trying to catch someone who's checking my email, and I embed an image in an email, and they read it, how will I know "who" it is or will it just tell me that someone else read it? If an IP address is provided, could I get a person's name from that?

not with an imbedded image, but a link to an image will work. with an imbedded image, you send the whole package out and no confirmation will ever be received.

with a link to the image there is a possibility, but the other end gets a little complicated. you need to be in control of the server hosting the image. you can then enable full logging and record anyone who visits the web page containing the email and record the ip address and time they visited. with that information you could find who read your email.

Email security question?

Scenario: User A and User B both have email accounts on the Microsoft Exchange server. They both work for the same organisation and the email accounts are accessable via the web. Their email is not hosted inhouse but outsourced.

User A knows User B's email password. If User A accesses User B's email account, is there any way User B can find out that it was User A that accessed it (ie by contacting IT Support and finding out the IP address's of machines that have accessed their account)?

yes, contact the IT department, they should be able to tell you the IP's that have accessed the account recently. (that is assuming thier servers actually log that info. and thier smart enough to find it for you!)

What happened to the security simbol I should see when I enter email? The password is not required either.?

When I switched to the new Yahoo email presentation, the security image I had created no longer appeared. When clicking on "email" the next screen was email and no password was required.

Sounds like some where along the line it has "remembered" you on that computer and is automatically signing you in. Sign out, and also check your instant messenger settings to signout and not auto log in or remember you. Also your IE settings will remember your passwords and log you in if you don't set them off
Reply:Sign out. Close your internet browser. Open it back up. Go to Yahoo and try again. If it still automatically logs you on, go to your settings. There is an option to require a password. If you share a computer with your family, someone probably saw a box pop up and clicked "Do not ask me this again." I use outlook express for my e-mail and it always shows that message. When I use Yahoo, I have to log in everytime I've logged out and then back in.

In your verbiage it would be little tough to explain but will give my best shot.

Encryption- This is basically sending a message to your friend eve without your enemy Adam being able to know what that message is . The way it works is Take a message , Take a password , Run some "Algorithms" {Usually the software does it for you its simply a series of logical steps} and we get a new message which only a person with the password can understand .

How do you get it for email, use PGP Google it and you'll get it.

Captcha- Remember when you tried to register for yahoo you had to type some weird letters and number displayed in a pic. Well now if it was not there , some evil minded programmer would write a program to automatically register all combinations of yahoo ids and there will be no way you'll get your favorite Aunnika@yahoo.com he he.

So to prevent such programs or BOTS from taking away all user names captcha is used , It can rarely help you in your day to day life .

2nd Part: Well I don't use yahoo mail so don't know exactly if that is a feature of yahoo. But in general such things are used to avoid spams too.

SPAMS: mails sent by some bad bad fellows to a huge list of email addresses which they get by different means for advertisement.

e.g- insurance , loans , viagra etc mails that keep coming to inbox from unknown senders.

Most probably what had happened was that your account was mistaken to be a spammers account by yahoo due to activities like large number of mails or other such automatic conditions that they put so it was just verifying that you indeed are a human , when after 5-6 times it realized that you indeed are a human ... it stopped asking he he. :)

So its simple there are ppl who write programs to send mails to a large number of ppl and such programs cannot read images like humans so yahoo simply checks that you indeed are a human and allows you to send mails so nice of yahoo. No need to worry at all . Hope that answers all your question .

at my request,and i can have it stopped whenever i choose!

up until the last week or a week and half ago i was recieving 3-5 email notifictions a day of virus and malware attacks.

But lately i have been getting like 14 virus /trojan warnings a day how come the big rise all of a sudden,its getting ridiculous

soon 3qtrs of the internet and computing in general will be awash with malware/viruses if it keeps up at this rate

personally i think its one or 2 viruses a week that hit the internet

Wrong Information in my email security?

well. I made an account a long time ago just to use for when I put information into sites and for myspace and things like that. I have another email account that I use all the time. someone who knew my password changed the password to myspace and now I need to get a new password sent to my first yahoo account but don't know the password to check my mail in that account. I also must have put a wrong birthday or something in the information for that account because the security answers are coming up as being wrong when I put the correct information in. Is there anyway at all that I can find out the password to my first email account without knowing what information I put in ?? I highly doubt it, but thought I would ask anyway.

Absolutely NO. that is what security means. if i were you, just create a new one and this time try to make a memo so that in cases like this you will be able to check things that you forgot in retrieving your account in the future. though you have to keep that memo secured also that no one in your home will be able to see.

This is called spoofing, or phishing and is intended to get you to panic and answer one of them, giving details. Is there a way of ensuring email security every time?

When the setting on the network computer I use was changed by someone without my knowledge I could not access my email accounts. I had to use an alternative method to send email by opening another account.Even then, that browser was changing the size of the font and page width etc; but I got the mails out. The matter which concerns me is if there is any security on a shared network.I have read that even keystrokes can be monitored.How can one tell if this is the case on the computer you use at work or elsewhere? How can you get a lock to show when you are writing an email or other personal data that you do not wish to share with others? Please help.

there is only one true way, but it verifies the machine that's sending it, if someone else is sitting at that machine, using that account, there's little one can do to secure that.

the method is a sender certificate. Certificates can be purchased from domain registrars (godaddy, networksolutions, register.com etc).

There are several categories of certificates, but their purpose is always the same, verification. They are most commonly used for https sites.

what you can do is purchase a mail sender certificate and then any email sent in your name can be encrypted using your certificate with the same security that an https site would have.

I'd have to know more about your email client to be more specific.

As this is an old account, I assume your email is attached to this account. Just go to your profile (click on you name on the top and choose edit profile.

Your email address is on the top. Your password is the same as for answers.

If this is not what you want, give more details.

Best option is to call up the phone number on the back of the credit card and plead insanity.

Actually you can report it but there is not a lot Yahoo can do about these scams. The messages come from computers which are taken over by hackers and used for this purpose. It is almost impossible to catch these people. The main thing is for us to be careful not to fall for their scams. Don't answer just delete them Good luck and be careful.

The reason it does that is because of the browser history. Set the number of days it stores the history to 0. Then it won't save the history.

I'd be inclined to use a webmail address for this, something like Hotmail. Go to www.hotmail.com to set things up. One of the advantages is that if you don't use your account for 30 days or so, it gets automatically cancelled - good news if you're getting lots of spam etc. Then you just set up another account.

Can you still log in? If so, simply reset the password. If necessary, cancel the mail account and register for a new one.

If not, contact customer service. With most serious email providers, you can send them a copy of your ID and they will reset your account for you. Give it a try. :)

You still can access your emails despite that message. That is just a warning message that appears, when the security cert. of a site has expired. It's either that, or your computer's date setting is incorrect.

You just have to click 'ok' on the warning message window, and go check your emails like you usually do.

open a new account, and change your password frequently, and don't put an easy secret question, but I don't think you can prevent losers to hack your email... sorry....

I just received an email that said Yahoo was checking my user information for me to keep my email or it would be deleted. The return address for my information is at live.com. I had a Yahoo email account and my ex somehow found a way to change my password and break into my account. I closed the account and re-opened a new email address with Gmail. You need to set up your Internet Connection so it is secure.

Go into your Network Connection,Properties,and make sure you have

a Wep Key setup.

This can be any numbers you like,just make sure you write it down

and keep in a safe place.

Then nobody except those you allow will be able to get into your computers files.

You will also see a padlock and secure network symbol in your Connections panel beside your connection.

I had Norton 360. I was a dedicated Norton user for years, and had nothing bad to say about it. Then my Norton 360 failed to protect my computer and I lost it due to virus damage and had to buy a new computer.

I no longer trust Norton.

My advice to you is to do what I did. I've never regretted it.

Download the Norton removal tool and get it out of your system. Uninstall it and throw it in the trash. I know you paid for it. But put it down to experience.

Is it possible to change the security question in the yahoo email?

Because I forget what I have given in my mail when I created it..... but no problem still I am using .... I know the password.... But I want to change it because if there is any problem I want to retrive it....

You should be able to change it on the "My Account" button at the top of this page. Just go to your account info and click edit.

If you have forgotten your yahoo password and you cannot provide the same information you gave during registration or when you last updated your account. I an unable to download pics of any file from my Yahoo mail. When doing so, teh "save" option is prompted but when I click the result is: Your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded.

Confusing and frustrating! I can download files from some yahoo accounts and not the others.

You have to go into your internet options. Click on the button with a gear on it if your in internet explorer then internet options. You then click on the privacy tab, and change the bar one notch lower. Then try again. If it doesn't work, move the bar back and then click on the security tab, and move the slider bar to a notch lower. If this doesn't work just go back and forth between privacy and security to see how far you must move one before it works. You may have to start your browser over again to test it, but I am pretty sure you shouldn't have to.

Any way tell me one thing that did you provide yahoo mail any alternative e-mail that is mail address belonging to other mail service such as hotmail, rediffmail, gmail etc. if yes, then please login to that mail account probably from there you get any information. One thing more that if it is so easy to change a password without replying to personal informations, it will almost be impossible for any body to make the password safe. Then any one can change the password of any account. So this is all for the security of our accounts.

yes it is a scam- just delete it and any similar emails that you receive, even if they come from your own bank. Never, ever follow link embedding in an email - always go to the bank's web site by typing in the address yourself.
Reply:Whenever bank needs your attention, they'll call you or send a snail-mail letter. My banks also uses internal messaging service which delivers to my account inbox, but it has nothing to do with emails.

You may get similar scams "on behalf of" ebay, bank of America, paypal, Microsoft and other reputable institutions. I tend to report such.

Yahoo scans attachments once you click on the attachment in your email. Then it gives you an option to download or open the file. You could always download it and then scan it with whatever virus scanner you have on your computer in case you want to double check Yahoo's scanning.

There really isn't a threat from Word or Excel documents in terms of viruses. The only problem you may have with them is if they have malicious macros embedded in them. Word and Excel (and the other programs in the Office suite) have an option to not allow macros to be run, so if you get a Word file from someone you don't know and you don't want to run the risk if it having a macro virus in it, turn off macros in Word before you open it (hopefully you'll have scanned it before deciding to open it with Word).

Now, if you're talking about "security" as in "can anyone else read this Word document," then no, there isn't any encryption involved. The MIME standards don't have a provision for encryption of attachments, but you could password protect the Word document before you send it. At least it's something to protect the contents of your document.

No, you wouldn't be informed by Yahoo about anything via Messenger. Possibly by email, though I doubt Yahoo would tell you you've been "reported" for anything, let alone chat abuse (if you go to Yahoo chat, you'll see that people get away with everything there).

More likely, someone just wanted you to click on the link so they could get information from you, install a virus on your PC, etc.

ok, just had to change password on my yahoo email account. should i re change it in the next 7 dyas (to new password) for added security???

what else can i do for added security???

Passwords should be easy for you to remember, but difficult for other people to guess. Also, although it is a good idea to change your password from time to time, changing it too much may cause you to forget your password. For some tips on choosing passwords, go here:

Reply:For just an email account i don't personally see the need for constant change or extra security unless your emails will contain top secret information.
Reply:Do you have good virus, adware, spyware programs that are kept updated?

Do you run manual scans at least once a week?

Is your firewall turned on?

If the answer is no to any or all the above questions, you may have had a keylogger downloaded to your computer.

Make you have all the above done and do at least 2 full scans.

If anything is found, restart your computer and rescan. Repeat this until nothing is found.

Also if you check save my login credential or auto login, some may have copied your login credential files and cracked your login and password.

Never save passwords.

Always have your logins set to type them in each time you access a secure site that requires a login.

Reply:Yahoo is pretty secure, put your password in a safe place. I don't see the need to change it again, unless you've allowed others to know it.
Reply:As long as you make up a secure password which no one can possibly guess, like favourite pet's name or something like that but make it a combination of upper and lower case and with figures. I know it's harder for you to remember, but also more difficult for anyone else to figure out too.

Reply:Change your password when you feel like, but changing it every two weeks is good. Keep seprate accounts for family and close friends and keep mailing lists or subscribtions on the others (these are a house for spammers) Make a disposible id for Junk mail (yahoo allows that too) and as a last word. Nothing is SAFE on internet, try shifting to a desktop client if you can atleast your mails will be in your own system and not on yahoo or hotmail servers here.

I don't think you can have it. For security reason, how does Yahoo know that you're the legitimate user if you forget the password and the security question?

you might have installed a firewall or Anti virus software which is enable to block emails with attachment or all mails. Pls check your Anti Virus client and even if you have installed firewall

It's not amusing for anyone to have their email account hacked...

But in reading this article, it seems that two accounts were looked into, one being done by the Federal Investigators involved with that Trooper investigation, and the other that was reported on the news tonight, by some random people that do this kind of thing for fun I guess. It states they belong to a site where hackers post the documents they find on corporations, Govt etc...

In a way it reminds me of people who are addicted to video games and won't quit until they beat the game....

From reading the article though, I think it would be in Mrs. Palin's best interests to cooperate with the investigation board like she wanted to from the beginning and not let the McCain campaign dictate her position in that regard....

If you have forgotten your yahoo password and personal information its not good news and the probability is you have lost that account and need to open a new one. If there was a easy fix it would be open to abuse from hackers. the password and password recovery rules are there to protect you.

Open up a browser and click on Tools on the menu bar. Then go to internet options. Click on Security tab and then click default level. Make the security "LOW". But that will also make it easier for viruses and spyware.

last year i got a nasty spyware infection so i went out and bought Norton 360 ( big mistake, i think it sucks ) so i called the '' Symantec '' customer support line and told them my problem, they asked for email address and said they would '' take control of my computer '' and remove the infection manually, i declined it after they said would cost $40 to do it.

but it got me to thinking.....

if an absolute computer expert has my email address can they take charge of my pc just like that?

kinda frightening to say the least, how can just that little bit of info allow someone to bypass all of my security measures?

They can do it because you have the security app installed most likely.
Reply:since you gave your email address, they could access your IP address and using remote access, or other applications, get your information.

I would recommend getting AVG 8.0 Free as well as Ad-Aware SE personal. These applications can protect your computer from virus's, trojans, spyware, adaware etc.

You can also turn off remote access and reset your IP address every once in a while.

I just had to clean a friends's computer since it got a bad virus
